For adults with disabilities, finding inclusive employment opportunities adds to the challenge of a job search. Questions about workplace accommodations, transportation, benefits eligibility, and employer expectations can make the experience feel stressful or overwhelming. That’s why Boone Center offers Competitive Employment Services, which are designed to support job seekers every step of the way: from career exploration to long-term success on the job.
We don’t offer generic solutions for job seekers who are interested in working in the community. Our employment services are tailored to meet each candidate where they are in their job search and help them move forward with confidence. KEY WAYS BCI HELPS ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES IN THEIR JOB SEARCH:
- Benefits Planning Consultations & Group Meetings
One of the biggest concerns job seekers with disabilities face is how employment may impact their benefits. Questions about Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, and other public benefits can create uncertainty around pursuing work. Our team offers Benefits Planning Services so individuals can make informed decisions about employment without worrying about unexpected consequences.
Through one-on-one consultations, job seekers can meet with trained staff to better understand how earning income may affect their benefits. We also offer group benefits planning meetings, where participants can:
-
- Learn the basics of work incentives and benefit rules.
- Understand how employment and earnings interact with public benefits.
- Ask questions and hear from others navigating similar concerns.
- Job Discovery & Exploration
Every successful job search starts with understanding the individual behind the resume. Our Competitive Employment team works closely with job seekers to collect insights through conversations, observations, and experiences. This information helps us make thoughtful recommendations about job paths that are both realistic and fulfilling.
The job discovery and exploration phase is about more than just finding a job — it’s about finding the right job. Some of the key ways we help job seekers in this stage include:
-
- Helping candidates articulate career goals and identify preferences for their ideal role.
- Offering work trials and hands-on learning opportunities.
- Creating or refining resumes that highlight skills, experiences, and strengths.
- Support with navigating online job systems and completing job applications.
- Practicing and preparing for job interviews.
- Making sure job seekers understand how to request reasonable work accommodations.
- Job Coaching & Supported Employment Follow Along.
Our job coaches continue to provide support to candidates once they are hired through Job Coaching and Supported Employment Follow Along services. As individuals gain confidence and independence, support is gradually adjusted. The goal is always to promote long-term success while respecting an employee’s autonomy.
Boone Center offers check-ins and mentorship as roles evolve, schedules change, or new challenges emerge. This ongoing relationship helps both employees and employers feel supported and leads to stronger, more positive employment outcomes. BCI job coaches can help with:
-
- Learning job tasks and workplace routines.
- Developing effective communication with supervisors and coworkers.
- Building time management and organizational skills.
- Problem-solving challenges that arise on the job.
SKILL BUILDING WITH BCI EMPLOYMENT ADVISORS
Interactive weekly meetings with BCI Employment Advisors offer one-on-one job readiness training to support each job seeker’s unique goals. Participants learn how to analyze job descriptions, identify required skills, and determine how their strengths align with employer expectations. Advisors also help candidates understand the purpose behind common interview questions, so they can provide thoughtful responses that highlight their abilities and experiences.
Weekly meetings encourage participating in job fairs and networking events, where job seekers learn how to connect with community employers and peers in a professional setting. Participants receive support in developing an elevator pitch that clearly communicates their skills, interests, and career goals.
In addition to job search skills, meetings are designed to build overall workplace readiness. Sessions include interactive discussions on appropriate interview attire, workplace expectations, effective communication, and other topics. This meeting format allows Employment Advisors to provide guidance and support each participant’s progress toward meaningful, sustainable employment.
